Principal Business Analyst - Job Role & Responsibilities

Magic: the Gathering is going through an exciting phase of growth, bringing to bear new technologies, innovative data streams, and novel platforms to reach fresh audiences and understand our fan base in groundbreaking new ways! We need a stalwart Principal Business Analyst to use these new tools—while incorporating existing research and data—to spearhead poignant analyses which will deepen our understanding of Magic community and identify key opportunities to reduce barriers to entry for new players while surprising and delighting longtime fans.

This individual will apply their eye for business along with their analytics expertise, while partnering closely with analytics engineers and data engineers, to transform new data sources into actionable insights and illuminating visualizations. This role will make impactful recommendations with which design and product teams to act upon. They will also remain forever inquisitive of the business—asking questions and finding new stones to turn over. Overall, this individual is to be a cornerstone on the Magic Analytics team, elevating data awareness and crafting meaningful insights which will be essential to building Magic's future!

What You'll Do:

  • Drive business action through analytics. Focus broad research into clear recommendations with well-crafted reports delivered directly to business partners.
  • Coach and train the Magic Analytics Team. Provide a business perspective to ongoing research and mentor junior analysts in how to craft actionable business reports.
  • Lead analytics initiatives to drive meaningful impact and change. Independently and proactively identify and quantify business opportunities through timely, well-scoped research that filters the signal from the noise.
  • Build and maintain the reporting lifeblood for Magic. Design reports with a keen eye for data visualization which will elevate data-driven decision making and data stewardship while assisting the Magic team in achieving their goals.
  • Think experimentally. Use your expert problem-solving and analytics skills to engage product teams with a test-and-learn mentality. Provide recommendations on goals and how to measure against them effectively.
  • Collaborate with a wide cross-section of teams. Engage with partners across product, marketing, sales, design, and more to build our reporting foundation, deliver relevant insights, and drive business impact.
  • Understand the Magic business deeply. Become a subject-matter expert on how Magic is produced, sold, consumed, learned, and played in order to identify analytics opportunities cross-functionally.
  • Exhibit constant curiosity. Never stop asking questions about how the business works, how our fans engage with our products, and how analytics can help bring it all to the next level.
Principal Business Analyst - Job requirements

What You'll Bring:

  • Experience: Master's degree in analytics (or similar quantitative field) with 5+ years working as a business analyst OR MBA or with equivalent experience in the consumer, digital, or technology sector.

OR 10+ years proven track record as an analyst in the consumer, digital, or technology sector. Experience working in the games (digital or physical) industry is a bonus.

  • Data Analytics: Deep understanding in causal impact and measuring incremental sales from business decisions. Proficient in statistical analysis (e.g., hypothesis testing, experimentation, regressions).
  • Experience working with Python or R to run statistical or regression analysis is a big plus.
  • Data Visualization: Proficiency in SQL and data visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI.
  • Connections: Proven track record of combining multiple sources of data across various methods to diagnose business challenges, provide holistic insights, and analytics to drive data-informed decisions.
  • Data Storytelling : Excellent verbal and written communication skills and proficiency in translating sophisticated analysis into easily consumed insights through written and verbal presentations.
  • Project Management: Proactively identify opportunities to deliver business impact, operate independently and manage personal time effectively, ability to prioritize projects and inform business partners of trade-offs when prioritization choices must be made.

Compensation Range, Currency USD:

  • Starting Pay Range: $104,400
  • Pay Range End: $179,400

Employees may also be eligible for annual and long-term incentives. In addition, Wizards of the Coast provides a variety of benefits to employees.
