Business Analyst - Job Role & Responsibilities

At Amazon, we're working to be the most Customer-centric company on earth. Amazon Transportation Services (ATS) is looking for an innovative, results-oriented Business Analyst, who is comfortable diving into complex problems and can develop solutions to recommend business decisions. You have a department-wide view of the analytical solutions that you build, and you consistently think in terms of automating or expanding the results company-wide. You should be skilled in database design, conduct analytics using SQL, and build lightweight tools and methods for others to replicate and scale their work. You are comfortable dealing with large and complex data sets, and have experience building self-service dashboards and using visualization tools especially Tableau and Quicksight. You should have strong analytical and communication skills, and ability to work through ambiguous problems in a fast paced environment to develop and define key business questions and requirements

In this role, you will analyze data and insights from various areas of business to diagnose data issues, identify improvement opportunities, and partner with analytics teams to deliver new features or tools. Stakeholder management is a substantial element of the role. This role will manage large, complex initiatives, deal with ambiguity, balance speed with quality, and advocate on behalf of the customer to provide high-performance solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain automated reporting, dashboards (especially Tableau), and analyses to enable our team to self-service of data needs, allowing you to focus on answering hard and ambiguous problems.
  • Write high-quality SQL queries to retrieve and analyze data from database tables (ex. Redshift, MySQL, Oracle).
  • Ability to break down and solve complex problems while actively engaging with internal partners throughout the organization to meet and exceed customer service levels & transport-related KPI’s
  • Recognize and adopt best practices in reporting/analysis: data integrity, test design, analysis, validation, and documentation while driving scalable solutions.
  • Understand data resources and know how, when, and which to use (and which not to use)
  • Continue to move forward in the face of ambiguity and imperfect data. Find a solution around the problem that still maintains a high analytical bar. You do not suffer from “analysis paralysis”.
  • Ability to manage through conflict with a positive, flexible and professional attitude
  • Communicate analysis results and techniques, both verbally and in writing, clearly and confidently to peers and business partners.
  • Explain analysis results to the stakeholders through verbal and written communications.

Key job responsibilities

  • Enable effective decision making by retrieving and aggregating data from multiple sources and compiling it into actionable reports/dashboards
  • Translate data into actionable insights
  • Identify processes to automate and scale ad-hoc analyses
  • Design, develop and maintain scaled, automated, user-friendly systems, reports, dashboards, etc. that will support our business needs
  • Participate in strategic and tactical planning discussions
  • Solve complex problems by building scrappy and effective models
  • Work within time constraints to meet critical business needs

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of tax, finance or a related analytical field experience
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience defining requirements and using data and metrics to draw business insights
  • Experience with Excel
  • Experience with SQL

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of coding or Query languages with proficiency in SQL.
  • Ability to use coding or Query languages to extract data.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze key business metrics to drive business insight.
  • Track record of managing multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated experience of engaging customer-facing programs.
  • Ability to work cross functionally and strong negotiation skills.
  • Develop strong relationships across teams.
  • Highly organized individual who also wants to have fun building new products and services across geographies.
  • Ability to self-direct, multitask, and prioritize a constantly evolving workload.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $59,500/year in our lowest geographic market up to $143,100/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
