Business Analyst, Capital Investments - Job Role & Responsibilities

NREL’s Facilities and Operations' Project Management Organization is seeking a skilled Capital Investments Business Analyst to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the management, upkeep and continued improvement of the analytical processes, tools and systems that support NREL’s capital program. The Business Analyst will be responsible for tracking large amounts of information from across the Site Operations center, and making recommendations to our project management teams about scheduling, budgets, and building out project schedules. The Business Analyst will also serve as the owner of dashboards within Power BI and SharePoint, and will be the functional expert responsible for management and troubleshooting.

Housed within the Site Operations center, the Business Analyst is part of a diverse group of interdisciplinary experts from project management, engineering and construction, as well as research operations working together to strategically deliver state-of-the-art research laboratories and other facilities.

On-site, hybrid, and remote work settings are available for the successful candidate.

In addition to the overview listed above, the successful candidate can expect to:

  • Collaborate with project management teams to identify and prioritize data needs and requirements;
  • Maintain and improve data quality by conducting regular data audits and cleanups;
  • Develop and maintain documentation of data analysis and reporting processes;
  • Train and educate team members on data analysis tools and techniques;
  • Evaluate and communicate results through written reports and presentations;
  • Participate in and lead group meetings, including monthly project reviews;
  • Distill data and brief innovative solutions to complex issues in a manner that inspires confidence among the most senior-level internal or external audiences;
  • Develop monthly/quarterly/annual reports that inform planning for Site Operation goals;
  • Understand and help clarify the linkage between program funding forecasts and the outlook for continued work on specific projects and activities;
  • Work with various stakeholders across the lab to forecast and plan for facility and equipment investment, maintenance, and recapitalization needs.
Business Analyst, Capital Investments - Job requirements

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Considerable knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Strong leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to collect and analyze complex data sets to identify trends and extract insights that can be used to inform decisions;
  • Demonstrated ability to design and develop reports and dashboards using common data visualization tools, including but not limited to Power BI and Tableau;
  • Demonstrated understanding of relational databases, including ability to create and maintain databases to ensure accuracy and accessibility of data;
  • Demonstrated skillset in structured data analysis, including use of tools such as SQL, Power Query, Excel, and/or Access to extract, transform and load data from various sources;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on a team, manage conflict, and maintain relationships with team members and project leaders;
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to prepare professional communications that are appropriate for internal and external stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with project management; including experience in finance and/or business processes;
  • Familiarity with online collaboration platforms like Microsoft Teams;
  • Desire to continually develop project management skills, including learning how to use and apply new project management tools or using existing tools to meet project needs;
  • Knowledge of national laboratory structures and processes.
